Prayer needs no walls

Prayer is a person’s way of being and living before the face of God. It is as natural and necessary to spiritual life as breathing is to the body. We asked those who participated in the Oulu diocese’s mission celebration how they feel the meaning of prayer in their own lives.

God sees us every moment. He wants to live with us in personal connection. We can only be in God’s presence or talk to him.  Prayer is respecting God and trusting him. He is able to answer our prayers. The Bible tells us to pray in all situations:

If you are facing adversity, pray. If you are happy, sing songs of thanksgiving. If someone is sick, call the elders of the congregation to him. Their job is to pray for him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

God’s answer or receiving it may not happen in the time we would like.  Reference is often made to Paul’s thorn in the flesh, which God did not remove despite Paul’s prayers. Paul’s realization was that the most important thing is receiving grace: Jesus has died on the cross for us. We get to live as his children and connected despite the difficulties.

Church Magazine’s Themes

Great Commission

(Instruction of the resurrected Jesus Christ to his disciples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world.) All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. So go and do it all nations my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you to observe. And behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the world. (Matthew 28:18–20)

Messengers of Jesus

Jesus declared that the kingdom of God is a gift. He promised forgiveness of sins even to the most sinful. Jesus sends his own into the world to testify of this grace and to serve people in his name. A Christian is a messenger of the Savior, Christ to his neighbor.

Belief and disbelief

Faith sees in Jesus the Son of God, who has the power to do God’s works. During Jesus’ lifetime, many people doubted him or were offended by him, rejected his divinity, and considered him a people’s fanatic. Faith and unbelief also fight in the heart of every Christian. Therefore, the follower of Jesus has to evaluate the foundations of his own faith.

Helping Ukrainians strengthens cooperation between congregations

The events in Ukraine have shocked people across the globe, including people in Finland and Rovaniemi. - If we must find something good about the terrible events in Ukraine, then helping Ukrainians has made local congregations strengthen their cooperation, says the student pastor in Rovaniemi parish, Jan Pohjonen. Jan Pohjonen says that the crisis in Ukraine has affected activities in Rovaniemi parish in many ways. - The war in Ukraine has revealed something about our humanity, which we have perhaps wanted to forget. As the war in Ukraine came on top of stress about the coronavirus, the burden has been heavy for many. In short, the situation in Ukraine has come up in my work as increased need for conversation, says Pohjonen. “Everyone is equal” - In the daily work of the parish, the crisis in Ukraine is of course also visible in the arrival of Ukrainian refugees in Rovaniemi. Those fleeing the war in Ukraine receive help from the parish in the same spirit of charity as all other r...
