Prayer needs no walls

Prayer is a person’s way of being and living before the face of God. It is as natural and necessary to spiritual life as breathing is to the body. We asked those who participated in the Oulu diocese’s mission celebration how they feel the meaning of prayer in their own lives.

God sees us every moment. He wants to live with us in personal connection. We can only be in God’s presence or talk to him.  Prayer is respecting God and trusting him. He is able to answer our prayers. The Bible tells us to pray in all situations:

If you are facing adversity, pray. If you are happy, sing songs of thanksgiving. If someone is sick, call the elders of the congregation to him. Their job is to pray for him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

God’s answer or receiving it may not happen in the time we would like.  Reference is often made to Paul’s thorn in the flesh, which God did not remove despite Paul’s prayers. Paul’s realization was that the most important thing is receiving grace: Jesus has died on the cross for us. We get to live as his children and connected despite the difficulties.

Great Commission

(Instruction of the resurrected Jesus Christ to his disciples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world.) All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. So go and do it all nations my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you to observe. And behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the world. (Matthew 28:18–20)

Messengers of Jesus

Jesus declared that the kingdom of God is a gift. He promised forgiveness of sins even to the most sinful. Jesus sends his own into the world to testify of this grace and to serve people in his name. A Christian is a messenger of the Savior, Christ to his neighbor.

Belief and disbelief

Faith sees in Jesus the Son of God, who has the power to do God’s works. During Jesus’ lifetime, many people doubted him or were offended by him, rejected his divinity, and considered him a people’s fanatic. Faith and unbelief also fight in the heart of every Christian. Therefore, the follower of Jesus has to evaluate the foundations of his own faith.

Let the fells figure out who stays next to you

Pastor Aki Hätinen: Some time ago I went to see The Apprentice, a film directed by Ali Abbas. The film about Donald Trump's years as a young man has stirred people's thoughts into one direction or another, since it was released in the run-up to the presidential election and there was even an attempt to block the film from being shown in US cinemas. Abbas' film is not a statement for or against Trump's persona, but the film's central point of interest lies elsewhere. The young Trump wants to get out from under the shadow of his businessman father and create his own business empire. He is mentored by a thoroughly immoral lawyer, Roy Cohn, who teaches Trump a few truths about making it in life: 1) Always attack, 2) Admit nothing, deny everything, and 3) Never admit defeat, even if you lose. Does this sound familiar? When Cohn falls seriously ill and needs reciprocal help from the man he helped rise to the top of the business world, Trump turns his back on his mentor. T...

In touch with God

The priest of the Lutheran parish of Rovaniemi, Aki Hätinen: Baptism is a gift we receive at the beginning of our lives and lasts throughout our lives. It is the most wonderful event that can take place in the human life cycle. According to Martin Luther (1483 - 1546), in baptism God gives man the gift of faith, which does not depend on our understanding, because faith is God's work in us. This certainly begs the question of how a hair wash can bring this about. It is not only the water itself that does the work, but the Word of God with the water and the faith that God has given in His Word. Without the word of God, water is not baptism, but just water. In the story of the Flood, water is the tomb that covered the sins of mankind. In the beginning of Genesis, water is the prerequisite for all life and growth. In baptism, water has both of these functions. What happened to Christ, applies to us who are baptized into his fellowship. And on the other hand, what we are or do as baptis...
